(Columbus, OH) - The Columbus Statehouse welcomed counties from across Ohio for a day of celebration and advocacy in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Individuals, families, and providers gathered to meet with their state representatives and senators to celebrate achievements and discuss key issues impacting the developmental disabilities community.

This years’ theme, the “Power of Support,” was woven throughout the day’s festivities. Speakers and advocates emphasized how support powers independence and paves the way for success and opportunity.

The program began in the Statehouse atrium with remarks from Governor Mike DeWine and Director of Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities Lyndsay Nash. Attendees also heard from State Representatives Dontavius Jarrells and Crystal Lett, along with Senator Mark Romanchuk. Each legislator shared their personal “why” - their commitment to championing the developmental disabilities community.

Luke Dennis, President and General Manager of WYSO Public Radio, welcomed a panel of three speakers to the stage. Each panelist brought a unique background and personal story of resilience, yet all highlighted the impact of community support. Panelist Hope Hindel encouraged the audience saying, “I am here to let you all know that you can pursue your dreams and your goals, no matter what your limitations are.”

The day’s keynote address was delivered by renowned sports broadcaster Jason Benetti, widely recognized as one of the leading voices in baseball. Many may not know that Benetti was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a young child. He shared stories of the people who helped him discover his passion and build his career. He recalled announcing a high school band performance when an adult told him, “Hey, you’re pretty good at this!” This moment helped set the course for his future. Benetti has since become one of the most respected broadcasters in the industry and was recently named the voice of Sunday Night Baseball on NBC.

After the program concluded, members of the Warren County Voices Speaking Out advocacy group met with Senator Steve Wilson and staff from the office of Representative Adam Matthews. They discussed concerns including transportation challenges and potential Medicaid cuts. The conversation was productive and helped ease anxieties surrounding these issues by identifying possible solutions.

This event served as a powerful reminder that when communities come together, meaningful change is possible. With continued collaboration between advocates and lawmakers, Ohio can ensure that every individual with developmental disabilities has the support, respect, and opportunities they deserve.
